The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is a global intergovernmental treaty aiming at the coordinated and concerted conservation and management of migratory species and the ecosystems on which they depend. This position is located in Bonn, Germany, at the ASCOBANS Secretariat, which is provided by the CMS Secretariat.

Under the overall supervision of the Executive Secretary of the UN Environment/CMS Secretariat and the direct supervision of the Head, Aquatic Species Team, the incumbent assist with coordinating the functions of the Secretariat of the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic and North Seas (ASCOBANS). The incumbent is responsible for the provision of support to the Parties through the organs of the Agreement, the provision of secretariat services at all meetings of the Parties and the Advisory Committee or any other subsidiary working groups which are deemed necessary by the Parties, and for assisting in the proper management of funds and the administration of the ASCOBANS Secretariat as follows: 

Responsibilities
1). Assist with the implementation of the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS), including monitoring, analyzing and reporting on specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties; identify and tracks follow-up actions.

2). Provide substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends concerning marine mammals in the ASCOBANS region.

3). Plans and facilitates workshops, teleconferences and other events to support Parties to implement ASCOBANS and to engage Non-Parties to ratify ASCOBANS.

4). Prepares and monitors annual national reporting; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions.

5). Drafts and contributes to various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications and press releases.

6). Prepares and organizes meetings of the Advisory Committee, of the various Working Groups and the Meeting of Parties, and any other workshops that might arise to advance implementation of ASCOBANS. This includes proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents, presentation and handling logistics.

7). Undertakes media and outreach activities, including regular news items for the ASCOBANS homepage and Facebook page. Preparation of press releases, as appropriate.

8). Coordinates the ASCOBANS budget, including fundraising and annual reporting to Parties, and other administrative activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation
and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).

9). Performs other duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in marine sciences, biology, ecology, zoology, or environmental studies or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
 
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible work experience in managing conservation projects/programmes, or related area. Knowledge of the UN and its procedures is desirable.
 
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. A working knowledge of other languages of the Agreement area would be desirable. Knowledge of German would be an asset.

These positions are located in the Arabic Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM), New York. The Arabic Translation Service provides translation of parliamentary documents from English and other UN official languages into Arabic. The incumbents work under the general supervision of the Chief of the Arabic Translation Service.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Revisers will be responsible for the following duties:
•Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
•Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards. Makes full use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools and actively contributes to their utilization and implementation of any related IT tools and improvements.
•Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
•Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
•Carries out linguistic research and provides input to multilingual terminology databases and related reference tools.
•Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
•Participates in the setting of terminology standards.
•Supervises the work of small groups of translators/précis-writers.
•Assists the Chief of Service and Senior Revisers in managerial, administrative, operational, and supervisory responsibilities of the Service, including by acting as First Reporting Officer, as required.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required. Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required. Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.
 
Languages
Fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language. Arabic translators must also have knowledge of English and of one other official United Nations language, as tested by the relevant United Nations competitive examination.

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) for Humanitarian Partnerships with the Middle East and Central Asia, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Geneva.
Responsibilities
Within the context of the mandate entrusted to the ASG, the responsibilities of the Humanitarian Affairs Officer, herewith referred to as the Special Assistant, are as follows:

1. Keeps abreast of the issues in need of the ASG's attention and ensures smooth flow of relevant information; liaises with the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) in New York and disseminates information to Branches/Units and external contacts; oversees the day-to-day management of the Office of the ASG through interaction with Office staff and ensures its ready response capacity to requirements of the ASG;

Prepares for and attends ASG's bilateral meetings with Diplomatic Corps, Head of Agencies and Academics, as well as internal, inter-agency, external partners and donor meetings; reports on outcomes and follows up on actions as required, in particular when urgent OASG actions are needed in relation to humanitarian emergencies; coordinates and participates in Senior Staff Meetings, monitors implementation of decisions and attends other meetings as required by the ASG;

4. Ensures the release of public information relating to Humanitarian Assistance issues as required; makes recommendations to the ASG, in consultation with OCHA's and UNOG's information services;

5. Keeps in close contact with partners from the region to ensure that the partners are informed about the humanitarian-related information; organizes meetings, workshops and events with the partners;

6. Serves as focal point for OASG on work and cost planning exercise, drafts inputs for the ASG; also serves as a focal point on other specific topics and issues relevant to OASG as required;

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, administration or other related area in an international organization is required, of which two (2) should preferably be within the UN system, other comparable inter-governmental organisations or public administration. Experience in resource mobilization is required. Experience providing support to senior officials/management is highly desirable.
