Site Information

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) has over 6.1 million members, making it one of the largest Lutheran bodies in the world. Growing at a rate of over 5% a year, the ELCT constantly needs additional well-trained leadership to serve its congregations and ministries. Tumaini University, Makumira Campus (TUMA), is the main campus of the ELCTs university system and the ELCTs main site for theological education. TUMA began as a theological seminary founded in Lwandai, Tanzania, in 1947, which then moved to its current location in Makumira, about 10 miles east of Arusha, in 1957. It was given university status in 1996,following the decision of the Tanzanian government to liberalize the education sector and the subsequent enactment of the Education Act of 1995. The University is recognized by the Higher Education Accreditation Council of Tanzania and offers a variety of degree programs in many academic areas. There are five branch campuses throughout the country. There are approximately 3,000 students on the Makumira campus, with about 150 of them in the Theology Department, including both graduate and undergraduate students.

Ph.D. in Theology required. Desired majors: systematic theology or practical (pastoral) theology
Experience teaching at the university level or in a seminary is required
Excellent teaching abilities, excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English; any previous research and publication in the field of theology is helpful, but not a requirement
