This position is located in the French Translation
and Text Processing Section (FTTS) of the Conference Management Service
(CMS), Division for Management (DM), United Nations Office at Vienna
(UNOV). The incumbent will be working under the direct supervision of
the Chief of the Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
•Translate, mostly without revision, texts submitted mainly by UNODC, UNOV, CTBTO and UNIDO;
•Revise texts covering subjects dealt with by the above-mentioned bodies and organizations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency in legal matters.
•Meet the established workload and quality standards;
•Develop new terminology for use where none exists in the target language; carry out linguistic research and participate in the preparation of online terminology records and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools;
•Coach and assist junior translators, give them feedback on their work and brief them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology and a number of subjects, as required;
•Participate in drafting or consistency groups;
•Supervise the work of small groups of translators during meetings;
•Contribute to the quality management of outsourced documents;
•Perform other work related duties as required.

A
first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent
status. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined
United Nations Language Competitive Examination for
Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy
Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in French or any United
Nations language competitive examination in French held before 2017.
A
minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing,
editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading
or production editing is required. Experience in the use of standard
computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required. Three years of
experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.
Legal studies and/or experience with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations will be considered an asset.

Fluency in French, which must be the candidate’s main language.
